    A rare collection of photographs by Mika Ninagawa that show the charm of Kyoto's Hanamachi

    Mika Ninagawa has selected 15 geiko and maiko, three from each of the five Hanamachi pleasure districts of Kyoto (Gion Kobe, Miyagawa-cho, Ponto-cho, Kamishichiken and Gion Higashi), and has created the original designs of the art sets to match each individual image.

    Artist Profile
    Mika Ninagawa was born in 1972 in Tokyo, Japan. She is a multidisciplinary artist who works in photography and film. Her 2008 retrospective exhibition, “Mika Ninagawa: Earthly Flowers, Heavenly Colors” opened at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery and toured several museums throughout Japan, attracting over 180,000 visitors. In 2010 Rizzoli New York published her first international monograph, MIKA NINAGAWA. She has also forged a career as a film director, directing a number of popular films including “Sakuran”, “Diner” and “No Longer Human”.
