2023年3月発売の『Artists in the Americas』に掲載させていただいたNaguさんが来日中に弊社に遊びに来てくれました！編集部やデザイン部など社内を見て回ったり本を見たりしていただきましたが、せっかくなのでサイン色紙をお願いしつつその最中にお話を聞かせていただきました。

Nagu, one of the artists featured in 『Artists in the Americas』, released in March 2023, came to visit our offices during their trip to Japan! Nagu toured our editorial and design divisions, among others, and saw a copy of the finished book. We also took this opportunity to ask them to sign colored paper while talking about the book.

【インタビュー】

――日本語が本当にお上手ですね
――Your Japanese is really good.

まだ書くことはできないので、上手くないです。会話はアニメをみて覚えただけなので、オタクっぽい喋りかたになっている気が……。

I can’t write in Japanese yet, so I’m not very good. I just remember dialogue from anime I’ve seen, so I probably speak like an otaku…

 

――色紙はアナログですが、いつもはなにを使って絵を描かれているのですか？
――The shikishi board is analog, but what do you usually use to draw your illustrations?

前はフォトショップ を使っていたのですが、今はクリップスタジオを使っています。

I used to use Photoshop, but now I use Clip Studio.

 

――イラストを描き始めたきっかけは？
――When did you start drawing illustrations?

中学生の時、ジャパニーズコミッカーズの英語版に黒星紅白先生の絵が載っていて、それを図書館でみていいと思って。それでデジタルイラストを知って、イラストを描き始めました。夏休みに友達はバイトをするんですが、自分は家にこもって絵を描き続けて練習しました。その後大学に行って絵からはなれていたのですが、両親に卒業後はなにがしたいのって言われたときに、絵に集中してみたいと思って。不安はありましたが、日本でも活躍していている海外の作家さんはいらっしゃったので、自分もそうなりたいなと思って頑張っていました。そのあと、依頼の連絡がきて本当にラッキーでした。

When I was in junior high school, I came across the English editions of Japanese comics with illustrations by Kuroboshi Kouhaku, so I would look for them at the library. That’s how I learned about digital illustration and started drawing illustrations. During summer vacations, my friends had part-time jobs but I stayed at home to practice drawing. After that, I went to college and drifted away from illustration, but when my parents asked me what I wanted to do after graduation , I decided I want to focus on illustration. I was nervous about it, but there were several overseas artists already actively working in Japan , so I tried to aim to be like them. After that, I was really lucky to get commissions for illustrations.

 

――こだわりなど教えていただけますか
――Can you please tell us what you particularly focus on in your work?

普通のキャラクターじゃなくて、描きやすいのに覚えやすいものがいいかなと思って描いています。本屋にいってもラノベはいっぱいあるので、その中で目立つデザインがいいかなとも思っています。特にラノベですけど、作家さんの考えた世界を、私がキャラクターを作って世界をつくるプロセスが好きなんです。

I think it’s better to draw something that’s memorable, yet easy to draw, rather than ordinary characters. There are also so many light novels at the bookstore, so I think it’s good to have a design that stands out among them. With light novels, I especially like the process of creating characters and worlds based on the author’s concept.

 

――ごめんなさい、手持ちの画材が紙用マッキー数色しかないんですが、大丈夫ですか？
――Sorry but we only have markers in a few colors. Is that okay?

学校の授業中、ペンがピンクと黄色と青しかないのに、ノートによく描いていたから、大丈夫ですよ。黄色でハイライトとか、昔からよくやっていましたから。

During classes at school, I used to draw a lot in my notebook using only pink, yellow and blue pens, so it’s fine. I’ve used yellow for highlighting for a long time now.

――今後はどうしていきたいですか？
――What’s next for you?

アニメの現場に参加したことがありますが、楽しかったけど、アニメーターは本当に大変な仕事でした。アニメーターさんは線に自信があって、早いしうまいし、でも本当に勉強になりました。いつか自分のショートアニメーションを作ってみたいですね。あとはやっぱり絵が上手くなりたいです。黒星紅白先生の絵ははじめてみた絵が、今もっとすごくなっていますよね。神絵師ももっと上手くなるんだと思って。だから、わたしももっともっと上手くなりたいです。

I have worked on anime scenery, which was fun, but being an animator is really hard work. Animators draw with such confidence in their lines, and they are quick, so I learned a lot. I would like to create my own short animation someday. And of course I want to get better at illustrating. Those Kuroboshi Kouhaku illustrations I first saw are even more amazing to me now. Kamieshi are getting better and better, too. So I want to improve, too.

 

１時間程度で色紙一枚を描いていただいて感謝です。日本のイラストを見てイラストを描き始め、日本を舞台に活躍するNaguさん。とにかく絵を描くことが大好きという感じでした。また日本に遊びにきていただいた際は、お立ち寄りください。

We were grateful to have Nagu draw on a sheet of colored paper for about an hour. Nagu, who first started illustrating after seeing Japanese illustrations, is active on the Japanese scene. And we could really tell that they loved drawing pictures. We hope you will come by the next time you are in Japan.

Oh and recently, overseas creators have been coming to PIE for a tour, so if you come I might ask you to autograph a drawing like we asked Nagu!
